Market Governance Workshop

Market, Governance, and the Reinvented Role of the Legal System

In the era of globalization and privatization, the role of government, regulation and the legal system face fundamental change. Collaborative research between the University of Tokyo and Hokkaido University is currently focused on developing an intellectual framework to enable the design of legal institutions to achieve better governance of the market under these conditions. A new perspective on market governance will deal with the problems of market governance including:
  • what conditions are necessary for effective market governance
  • whether these conditions depend on the special characteristics of each market sector (such as medical services or financial intermediaries)
  • how any theoretically desirable state of governance can be achieved despite conflicting interests among stakeholders, and
  • when does the legal system operates effectively or fail.
This one-day workshop will provide an opportunity for all participants to actively exchange theoretical insights and evidence-based research findings in the areas of governance, regulation and law.
